Elon Musk’s AI Bots Are the First to Beat E-Sport’s Best Gamers

Earlier this year, Elon Musk announced OpenAI's mission to create robots that emulate human learning abilities. Now, in just two weeks of real-time learning, its AI bots have defeated some of the greatest e-sport gamers in the world.

The non-profit AI research company brought a 1-v-1 robot to The International 2017 tournament to battle pro players at the video game Dota, a game "vastly more complex than traditional board games like chess & Go," Musk stated in a Tweet.

Dota is a complex online battle arena game where players must learn to plan, attack, trick and deceive opponents with both strategy and intuition. In addition to uncovering hidden information, players can also utilize dozens of items and characters to enhance capabilities, creating an unfathomable amount of possibilities. Yet in just two weeks of real-time training, the AI bots have amassed "lifetimes" of compound experience via neural network, crushing its human competitors.

"Our bot has learned -- entirely via self-play -- to predict where other players will move, to improvise in response to unfamiliar situations, and how to influence the other player's allied units to help it succeed," OpenAI wrote in a blog post.

The next task for the AI company is to create a 5-v-5 Dota 2 team which can defeat top human teams.
