Taylor Swift Gives Heartfelt Performance of “New Year’s Day” on ‘The Tonight Show’

Last night Jimmy Fallon returned to The Tonight Show for the first time following the passing of his mother Gloria. Taylor Swift in turn made a surprise appearance on the show to perform “New Year’s Day” from her new album, Reputation.

The showcase accounted for Swift’s first-ever live performance of the tune, as it was especially heartfelt, of course given the circumstances. Following, Swift and Fallon met for an emotional hug to close out the segment.

At the beginning of the show, Fallon took some time to speak on his mother. “When we were little, my mom would walk us to the store, me and my sister, and we would hold hands,” he said. “And she would squeeze my hand three times, and say ‘I love you.’ And I would squeeze back, ‘I love you too.’ And last week, I was in the hospital, and I grabbed her hand and I squeezed. ‘I love you.’ I just knew we were in trouble.”

Swift’s “New Year’s Day” ultimately shares a similar sentiment with the line “You squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi/I can tell that it’s gonna be a long road.”
